A Workshop for High School Science Teachers

A workshop "Physics Instant Update - A Workshop for High School Science Teachers" was held at USC June 24-26. Our program included discussion groups with various USC professors. Selected laboratory experiments were presented by Jonah Hare our Lab Director.

The workshop was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and was organized by the following individuals: Ty Buxman, Science Teacher at La Canada High School and a former Director Undergraduate Studies Department of Physics and Astronomy at USC. Ty lead the discussions with the various USC professors as they presented their approaches to teaching introductory science subjects. Jonah Hare, Lab Director, Physics & Astronomy Department at USC, directed selected lab sections using the state-of-the-art equipment that is used in our general education classes. Stephan Haas, Professor of Physics at USC, welcomed the group and also lead a discussion group. Bill Layton, Lecturer, Department of Physics, UCLA, instructed the group on in-class demonstrations.

Thirteen High School Science Teachers from various high schools in the Los Angeles area attended the 3-day session. This has been a rewarding experience for both the visiting teachers and the professors participating in the workshop. We would like to thank all of those who have contributed to making this year's workshop a success and we look forward to next year's workshop.
