The majors in the department of Physics and Astronomy allow students to tailor an undergraduate degree to their individual interests. Specifically, the following degree options are available:

Bachelor of Science: Physics or Astronomy

The Bachelor of Science degree offers an in-depth and rigourous treatment of physics or astronomy for students intending to pursue careers in basic science.

Bachelor of Arts: Physics or Astronomy

The Bachelor of Arts degree is ideal for students pursuing careers in other fields (e.g. law, finance or business management). This degree provides a strong science background in physics or astronomy, while allowing the flexibility to pusue a minor or double major.

Bachelor of Science: Biophysics

This degree program is ideal for students preparing for medical school. The degree program will provide the rigourous physics and biology background required for graduate school or employment in biophysics. Students also fulfill all the requirements for entrance to medical school. Scheduling is arranged such that students are prepared to take the MCAT exam after the junior year.Students interested in this program should begin taking math, chemistry and physics during their freshman year (see sample schedule). Also notice that the Phys-151,152,153 sequence is an acceptable substitute for Phys-161,162,163.

Bachelor of Science: Physics/Computer Science

This interdisciplinary program is intended for students with dual interests in physics and computer science who wish to complete the essential courses for both majors within their normal four-year career. The program will prepare students for a career in a computer related field and/or science research.

Bachelor of Science: Physical Sciences

This program is ideal for students interested in teaching science at the secondary school level. The program includes course-work in physics, astronomy, chemistry and earth science. Students are encouraged to complete a set of additional courses required for the California State Single Subject Teaching credential through the School of Education.
