My current research interests lie in the field of ultracold atoms on optical lattices. Counter-propogating lasers are capable of producing a standing-wave pattern of alternating troughs and crests, thus yielding an effective lattice on which ultracold atoms can live. I use exact diagonalization to treat bosons on such a lattice with infinite on-site repulsion (hard-core bosons). This leads to interesting Mott-insulator and superfluid phases.
