Achievement Award - Dr. Alan Chao

Dr. Alan Chao received his Ph.D. degree in industrial and physical pharmacy from Purdue University in 1973. He received the degree of Honorable Doctor of Science from Purdue University in 2000 in recognition of his leadership and vision for the marketing and production of pharmaceutical products for human healthcare. Currently, Dr. Chao is Chairman and Managing Partner, Newport Healthcare Advisors, LLC. He is also the Founder and Chairman of Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (“WPI”, NYSE), and has been Chief Executive Officer of the Company since August 1985 to September 2007.

During the last 20 years, Dr. Chao has lead Watson’s growth through internal R&D, licensing and acquisitions of pharmaceutical products/technologies, as well as mergers and acquisition activities, and has had strong business development, strategic planning and execution, as well as financial investment and operational management experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He has led the planning and establishment of Watson Asia operations in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), Product Development and Manufacturing. Today, Watson has three distinct operating divisions: brand pharmaceuticals in Urology and Nephrology, the 4th largest retail drug distribution company, and the 3rd largest supplier of generic pharmaceutical products in the U.S. It employs close to 6,000 employees worldwide. Watson’s 2007 annual revenue was approximately $2.5 billion with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) over $500 million.

On a personal side, Dr. Chao has contributed to the establishment of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Irvine, California campus. He also has contributed to the establishment of the Allen Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy, located in the Purdue Research Park in Indiana, to provide leadership in pharmaceutical education, development and manufacturing. This first-ever, innovative learning program combines educational training with commercial-ready manufacturing experience.

Service Award - Professor David K. Ann

Dr. David K. Ann received his B.S. degree from National Taiwan University at 1978 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Purdue University in 1985. He is currently Professor at Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope. After his postdoctoral training at University of California at Davis, he joined University of Minnesota School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology from 1988 to 1994.  Dr. Ann moved to Los Angeles in 1994 and joined University of Southern California School of Pharmacy as an Associate Professor to Professor of Molecular Pharmacology & Toxicology and Medicine from 1994 to 2006. He is currently Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the Beckman Research Institute City of Hope National Medical Center and Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine at University of Southern California. Dr. Ann has trained 9 Ph.D. students and 8 postdoctoral fellows from his laboratory in the past 22 years. Dr. Ann's research interests focus on the signal transduction and post-translational modifications in the health and disease states. Dr. Ann has published more than 80 papers in different areas of biomedical sciences, including in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Cancer Research, Proc Natl Acad Sci, Autophagy and Science Signaling. Dr. Ann has served as interim Chair of the Department of Molecular Pharmacology & Toxicology, University of Southern California and is currently Associate Chair of the Department of Molecular Pharmacology of Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope National Medical Center. Dr. Ann also serves as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Medical Research Council of Canada, National Health Research Institute of Taiwan, National Science Council of Taiwan and Academia Sinica of Taiwan. He has served as President of National Taiwan University Alumni Association of Southern California.

Dr. Ann served as President of Chinese American Faculty Association Southern California from 2006-2007 and currently is a board member.
